IDIOMS AND BUSINESS
TERMINOLOGY: TRANSLATIONAL AND SEMANTIC PROBLEMS
Alfred Nobel Dnepropetrovsk University
The basic concepts of modern terminology
defining features, their place of terminology in language system are studied.
Characteristic features of idiom terminology are allocated and the basic
technicians of transfer of terms are analyzed, the difficulties appearing in
translation process of terms and are formulated the receptions, allowing to
solve translational problems as much as possible effectively.
Aim of the work: studying of features of
transfer of the terms as idioms on the basis of the analysis of system of
structural and conceptual conformity between English and Russian business
Work urgency: Necessity of studying of this
terminological system which is the least studied owing to the lack of
information from the business spheres.
Idioms and phraseologisms used as business terms are of great
importance and their study widens the knowledge about business and its
terminological system to a great extent.
The theoretical research of idioms has been performed by
Vinogradov V.V, Kunin A.V. and others. And taking into account the problems of
terms development we may say that such sphere of professional activity as
business absorbed all potential forces of vocabulary to express the units that
are peculiar to people`s business relations. As business covers all spheres of
people`s relations, incorporating all layers of population the terminological
usage of idioms is of great practical value. The terms and terminological
phrases of phraseological origin have always been more understandable and
sometimes more pragmatic.
We often read or hear the phrase "language - a living
creature," but most of us do not think about how and why this is so.
Living beings grow and change, and the same thing happens with the language.
Any person can easily tell the difference between the English and the language
of Shakespeare's contemporary authors, but today English is growing and
changing, and some of the trends of these changes is not easy to recognize.
We have studied different business idiomatic terms from the
point of view of their structure origin and semantics. The problem of
translation were also investigated widely in mind the aforementioned
characteristics and why the theory of translation worked out by our native
theoretician in the sphere of terminology, such as Karaban V.I, Pumpyanskiy
A.L, Skovokhod E.F. and others.
Idiomatic of any linguistic unit, including - the term is due
to loss of motivation, regular relationship between the plan content and
expression of a language unit by rethinking of its constituents.
Idioms, collocations reflect the national identity of
language. In phraseology captures the rich historical experience of the people,
it reflects the concepts associated with work, life and culture of the people.
The study of idioms is an essential link in the acquisition of language, to
improve standards of speech. Correct and appropriate use of phraseology gives
speeches unique originality, special expressiveness, accuracy, imagery.
Let's take a closer look at some aspects of the idioms. The
important fact is that idiom - is not only colloquial expressions, as many
people believe. They can be used in the formal style of speech and slang. They
can be found in poetry or in the language of Shakespeare, or the Bible. What is
an idiom? We can say that the idiom - is a series of words used in conjunction
with this series, and reporting the value of which does not coincide with the
value of each of the words idioms, taken singly. The way in which words are
combined, often appears random, illogical and even grammatically incorrect.
Therefore we can say that English idioms as terms are
different as to their status from standard English as they acquire all peculiar
features of terms, referring to the sphere of business terminological system.
