ENGRADE - MULTIFUNCTIONAL LMS

massive shift in educational structures is the introduction of learning
management systems. Popularized in higher education and now working their way
into secondary schools, LMS software provides institutions with a
digital space for everything from documentation and tracking to the delivery of
online teacher education and training.
Over the last few
years people are increasingly becoming interested in making use of the Learning
Management System (LMS). They have come to realize the significance of having a
competent environment for e-learning and look for best of programs or software
to meet their requirements.
The LMS is software
that tracks, delivers, serves, and manages education. Many popular LMSs are
internet-based to assist learning monitoring online, used to cater to different
administrative, deployment, and educational prerequisite. The LMS can provide
quantifiable results – where a classroom set-up may not.
Engrade is an
internet-based LMS, providing 250,000 teachers with a free and flexible gradebook,
attendance tracking, lesson plan builder, and much more.
I have been using
Engrade since September 2010 in three groups of first- and third-year students.
A teacher can
establish a grade book and an attendance register in a matter of minutes on the
site. The user interface is very intuitive: students can view current grades,
future due dates, and student attendance records.
I post grades and
absences, send assignments, and exchange messages with students.
The most important
aspect of Engrade is its usability. Within minutes after creating an account, I
began uploading files like syllabi, video, audio, etc.
Here is an outline of
the features built in Engrade:
Teachers can view
and edit everything in their class on one screen. This is basically the
overview of the teacher’s class that lets them see all assignments, calendar
entries, and all the attachments they have for their classes including Quizzes,
Wikis, Flashcards, and Files. You can add or delete any of these items on the
Dashboard conveniently in one place.
Teachers can easily
customize their gradebook to their exact grading system, enter score anytime
from anywhere. It includes features such as a customizable automatic grading
scale, manual grade override, weighted assignment categories, extra credit,
excusing a student from an assignment, and the ability to drop the lowest score
from a category. For added convenience, the gradebook grid uses AJAX to operate
just like a spreadsheet – all teachers need to do is click on a box and type a
number to change a student’s score.
quickly enter attendance based on your school’s marking system, export reports.
Teachers can easily
upload files, post homework and list class events so students and parents can
access them 24/7.
and students can safely connect online to answer questions in a private and
Wikis allow you to
create web-based collaborative educational documents. This entire Engrade Help
document is an Engrade Wiki. Wikis may include formatted text, images, links,
YouTube videos, and flashcards. They are a great way to exchange knowledge with
students and other teachers.
Teachers can make
studying a breeze for students with Engrade’s free online flashcards.
parents get real-time, 24/7 access to their grades.
Since Engrade is
online, there is an added advantage that I am able to access your grades
anywhere that I have internet access (handy for inputting marks when you are
marking at home). Of course, this also carries disadvantages with it: if the
website goes down for any reason, your marks are lost, and if you lose internet
access but need to get into your gradebook, you won’t be able to.
For students that
do register, teachers can send private messages to them in a safe, SPAM-free
environment. Engrade only allows students to message with teachers who provided
them with the Access Code, that way teachers can confidently encourage students
to sign up knowing that students can’t be contacted by unknown persons.
A new excellent
feature has been incorporated in Engrade recently – Allthink.
Allthink is the
easiest way to create and share lessons online. The teacher can build an online
lesson using YouTube videos, images, and text, then add a short quiz so student
can assess themselves. Then there is nothing to stop the teacher from sharing it
with other teachers and students around the world.
experience, students need little time to get used to using Engrade, but as soon
as they have familiarize themselves with the system, they find it easy and
convenient to communicate with the teacher or their peers.
shortcoming of the Engrade service is that teachers have to manually input an
identification number for each student. Students need a unique identification
number to login to their accounts.
